Comedy vs. Ninjas

Monday, February 21st, 2011

I love this show we do at Tantra. I get a breathable 20 minutes to explore jokes, and really set my own pace. And I get to hang out with a ton of stand-up friends. It’s a nice dark room to do comedy in, and all the performers usually have a ton of fun doing it. Chris Davison produces a cool show, so I’m sure it will be a night of everybody at the top of their game.

This poster was interesting to put together because its essentially two images. It’s kind of a comic in that way. I don’t usually design comedy illustrations this way, but with a different show should come a different design style. The last show at Tantra featured artwork from the awesome Julie Collins, and I knew I had a high bar to surpass. If you already know you’re attending, join the Facebook event!

The same week on Friday March 4th, I’ll be opening for King Rich at the Bay Street Theater.

Rape and Murder Tomorrow

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

It’s tomorrow! I hate that I didn’t color it, but colors could come soon. I will be doing a massive coloring job for the collected volume of comedy posters. More bad news: I will not be performing at this event, because I’m a really stupid person. Thanks for coming by the blog, even though I haven’t been posting . My life has just been a frenzy of emotions, events, etc. Lots of “E’s”. I hope I could post a little more, but with finals being super creepy, it may have to wait until break.

Female Comics and Females in Comics

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I’ve got my feet in both comics culture and the culture of stand-up comedy, and I’m seeing two similar conversations happening. Female comedians and female comic readers both face similar issues being that stand-up and comic books are largely male dominated.

First off, I am not a woman. I do not claim to be an expert in feminism or femininity. Just check my dating track record with women.  (Hint: it’s non-existent.) But my audience is surprisingly mostly women. I’ve received more responses, comments, and e-mails from women than men. Most of the people who have approached me after a stand-up show are women. And the people who most get excited about seeing my work at conventions and end up buying my comic books and prints are women.

THE RESOURCES

  • Jessie Geller writes how she feels as a female comic.
  • Here’s the article by Kate Hendricks linked to at the bottom of previous source, here. Also, here is the Vanity Fair article, “Who says Women Aren’t Funny?” from 2008.
  • A new web documentary series called Welcome to the Stage recently just popped up. It’s about stand-up comedy in San Francisco, and though it hasn’t really brought up the issue of “female comedy”, it follows 4 female stand-up comedians exclusively.

Midnite Garden Party!

Monday, April 26th, 2010

I’m opening with a set this Saturday at 11:45 before Bob Pendarvis’ Midnite Garden Party Variety Show! This poster was also drawn by Bob. It’s going to be a super rad night with lots of brilliant music and dancers (and me ofcourse!). Check out the Facebook event here.

Sensual Sounds, of comedy and music!

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I don’t do this often, but this post has a bonus illest-tration! I’ve just been making lots of work and you get to see both for the price of one visit! First, this Wednesday is another Coffee House event, with David Stine and Melissa Hagerty performing! I will probably be in attendance, so stop by and say hello to me.

Secondly, the “Sensual Sounds of an Arousing Evening” Comedy Show is THIS THURSDAY at the Sentient Bean, 8 to 10PM. It’s going to be a crazy fun show, because it is our Valentine’s Day-themed show. I will be covering topics revolving around dating relationship, and my specialty, SEX. It’s sure to be a fun, revealing event, and one that will make you cringe at how horrible some of the things in my life go. Bring a date, so that you can both share a moment of complete awkwardness and make love to afterwords.
