FLUKE 2010, Athens!

This Fluke far surpassed last year’s. Instead of doing the 4 hour drive the day of the convention and only attending Fluke for three hours, we went a day early. We made it to Athens Friday evening. I had the pleasure of traveling with my friends and colleagues Nate Marsh, Alex Mejias and her fiance Derek, and Luis Echaverria. All of them are magnificent artists, wonderful people, and a pleasure to lodge with.

My notes on Fluke

~Fluke is all mini-comics. The best things that sell are comics under $10. Comics around $5 are usually the most purchased. The usual con merchandise was sold, but amongst browsers, comics were king.

~The room at the Cine was a little smaller than Tasty World, which meant less exhibition space and lots of traffic jams. But with higher ceilings and brighter lights, it felt busier, and the all-around attitude was positive and could be seen and felt every which way you looked. Rumor has it that the venue may change, and “wildly imaginative” events will take place for the 10th Anniversary of Fluke in 2011.

The Evolution of a Resume

At some point early in an artist’s career, creating a resume is going to come up. And just like having a website, creating a resume is always better to do earlier than later. I’ve been trying to create the best document that shows my accomplishments, and every year I find myself tweaking. If you want to avoid some of the pitfalls I ran into, here is the evolution of my resume from 2008 to today.

1. List All Your Credentials

I began at JobCentral, SCAD’s online career resource, to create my first resume. It outlines the basics and advises you what to include. Start off by listing your accomplishments, jobs you’ve had, awards you’ve won. Based on your major you can even include your participation in a gallery, where your work has been published, etc. Don’t be afraid if your accomplishments stretch back to high school; use it anyways.

I got love for Student Media

This time last year I was beginning a job as Comics Editor for SCAD’s online newspaper, The District. I served for two quarters making artwork and comics, and I’ve received lots from it, including a few awards. Even though I no longer officially hold a position in the District offices, I still have love for the District. They are very active in journalism and entertainment with an online newspaper, quarterly magazine, and are neighbors with the great SCAD Radio. They’ve been very good to me, so I hope to see what new things they have for this year.

I won an Addy Award for third place in the Poster category. You remember that old thing?

I also won two awards with the Society of Professional Journalists. One is third place in Editorial Cartooning, and the other is first place in Online Feature Writing, an article which is written and drawn in comic form! You can read that by clicking here. The District is a wonderful place, so if you get the chance to work with them, submit to them, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the results! Give them love, my friends, and thanks for the support.

My moleskine of Thai things

I’m back in the U.S., with lots of energy and brand new things to share with you! Spring quarter is coming soon, and before that happens, I thought I’d stop here first and let you know what has been happening and where I’ve been. This week I was in Thailand, and I kept a journal during my trip. There are a whopping 17 pages of art and words up online, and will be available anytime in the Other Comics section. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!
